ベジ議連第５回レポート Fifth General Meeting of the Vege Council Japan

第５回目となるベジ・ヴィーガン議連が今月19日に衆議院議員会館で開かれ、Tokyo VeganオーガナイザーのNadia, Saori, Kanoが出席しました。

大きな発表の一つは、TokyoVeganも協力している観光庁によるもので、訪日ヴィーガン・ヴェジタリアン対応への取り組みに関してでした。目下、訪日観光客向けウェブサイトの準備などが進んでいるそうです。

また農水省からは、JASマーク制定の流れとISOによるヴィーガン・ヴェジタリアン認証が紹介されました。( ISOの最終案は徹底したコンタミ防止や動物実験禁止を含むので、同様の厳しい基準を日本で設けられるのか、独自にゆるい基準を作ってはどうか、それではまた世界から遅れを取る…などの意見が飛び交いました。)

件の「プラントベース」の表示問題については、消費者庁が検討中です。今回Tokyo Veganは世界標準の認識をまとめたPDF資料を配布し、以下の点を述べました。

「プラントベース plant-based」という言葉は周知の通り英語由来で、植物性、つまり動物性原料を使っていない商品を指します。消費者がヴィーガンの商品を探すとき、この言葉が世界共通の目印になっています。もちろん日本に住むヴィーガンたちも同様の認識です。この語を包装やメニューに表示する際は、国外でも広く使われている標準的定義に沿って用いなければ混乱をきたします。

一喜一憂はありますが、Tokyo Vegan一同、議員や省庁の方々がヴィーガン関連の諸問題に注目し、取り組まれていることを目の当たりにし、心底勇気付けられています。引き続き、根拠に基づいた海外の情報やヴィーガン消費者のニーズを意思決定者達に伝えていく所存です。

最後に、私たちTokyo Veganのオーガナイザーは、今回のベジ議連にて堀越啓仁衆議院議員にお会いできたことを大変光栄に思います。堀越議員は国会をはじめ随所で動物倫理を取り上げてくださっている方です。先日、堀越議員のインスタライブに出演させていただき、議連のことをはじめ、動物の権利啓発に関して色々なお話ができました。。

Fifth General Meeting of the Vege Council Japan

The fifth official Vege Council Japan meeting was held on Friday 19th February 2021 at the Second Members Building of the House of Representatives. Tokyo Vegan organizers, Nadia, Saori and Kano attended this time.

The main topics on the agenda were:

1. A new vegan information site for tourists. ( Ministry of Tourism).

2. The new ISO International standard for vegan/vegetarian food, and the possibility of creating a similar standard in Japan in the future. (Ministry of Forestry and Fisheries).

3. The use of the label “plant-based” for products in Japan. (Still under consideration by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs).

With regards to the latter, Tokyo Vegan handed out a PDF we had prepared on the issue. We also pointed out in a comment, that plant-based is an English language term that is used widely all over the world to help customers identify products, and as such, it is important to consider the global perception when considering usage in Japan.

We are very encouraged to see such a high level of engagement with vegan issues among Japanese lawmakers. We will continue to do our best to share fact-based information, based on global standards, with the council.

Finally, we had the pleasure of meeting Keinin Horikoshi MP at the meeting and subsequently joined him for an Instagram Live to talk about labeling and other vegan related issues. Horikoshi san is a politician who has taken up the issue of animal ethics widely, including in the Japan Parliament.”
